Team Awesome is on standby.

I'm glad to hear that everybody I've heard from so far hasn't suffered much loss beyond property damage.

I'm thinking very seriously about Rambo-ing my way to the Mississippi Gulf Coast tomorrow morning (9/2). I'll make a more serious decision when I hear back from a convoy that departed today. I haven't been able to the call through the impenetrable fog that is the cellular and hard-wire telephone system in the 228 area code. With Red Cross and FEMA aid possibly being delayed for a week or more, I feel that I need to tie a camoflage band around my head and deliver some water, food, and gas to these people.

If only my panty-dropping Geo Metro could be retro-fitted with tank treads.

Note to self: get a car-charger for the DS too.

Getting to MS from Mobile is actually far from impossible so long as you don't want to go past Ocean Springs. I know for a fact that I-10 is clear all the way to OS, but I've heard that the only way into Biloxi is through I-110. The camouflage band is hardly necessary.

The camouflage headband is COMPLETELY necessary.

Seriously! What was that all about?

I think I might start wearing a sweatband on principle.

I wanted to explore a little bit, but I was certain I had no business being in Biloxi or Gulfport. Those towns were pretty well locked down south of the railroad tracks, and I didn't want to hinder any rebuilding/rescuing efforts because I wanted to spend some time sightseeing.

Thanks for the traffic information, though. I ended up driving down 90 the whole way because I wasn't sure if the interstate bridges connecting Mobile to the Mississippi Gulf Coast were still accessable. If had the notion to check my e-mail from campus before going, it possibly would've saved me some time.

Rumor has it that while it's very difficult to TALK on cell phones with people down there, text messaging is getting through quite well.

because it queues up and sends when it can. and for the both of you, you can now reach me at 239-210-8967, or the house phone, whenever it decides to come back on, 662-281-8754.

Yeah, [info]kingfrankie and [info]evilbastard alerted me to the text messaging option. I'm such a retard with cell phones. I could rebuild the coast on my own in the time it would take me to send a text message typed via a number pad.

john, i'd love to go charge in there with you, but there's no way i can get to you. i think all the southward roads are still closed below hattiesburg, including 98. but if you make it in, text me to let me know you're ok. i'm making some donations tomorrow for a relief drive on campus.

Yeah, man. I really, really don't recommend you come down unless it's absolutely necessary. I did it mostly because my dad needed some supplies he couldn't get without wasting a lot of gas and time. The place is depressing, and (although a bunch of people have power and other conveniences at this time) it's devoid of modern pleasantries. The fact that you've been donating supplies is very awesome. Rats off to ya, Joey.

Dude, roll up on the coast motherfuckin' LUNDGREN style. Break that shit like it's Apollo Creed.

Just watch out for milk factories.

Hahaha! If only Hurricane Ivan [Draco] did this much damage, people would've been more prepared.

Yup, my mom made it in yesterday only because they were allowing people in with proof of residency. So as long as your drivers liscense has an address for down there, you are good to go. But bring supplies.

As for calls, people down there seem to be able to call out, but it is virtually impossible to call in. Text messaging works better.

I didn't have a problem with getting stopped. Most of the police and guard where concerned with other matters when I rolled through on Highway 90. Of course, I didn't try to drive to the beach or Biloxi either.

As far as supplies went, I took over several grocery stores' worth of water, gatorade, food, and a couple of gallons of gas (all I could get with the $25 limit in Mobile). What's the latest with your folks?

New Orleans was already a lawless hell. Now's it worse than that. Cah-razy. It's nice to see the community involvement in situations like this. It's nicer to know that once things settles back into routine, we can all go back to watching our TVs and ignoring our neighbors.

most likely i'll be doing something similar in a few days. if you'll be my Dolph Lundgren, i'll be your Jean-Claude van Damme. <3

the Geo's 3 cylinders of fuel-consuming power are looking pretty nice right now. there is no food, water or gasoline coming into the area. it's like watching Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome, Waterworld, and Escape from New York all at the same time.

If my gas tank was just a hair bigger, I'd be able to drive forever. As it is now, I get awesome mileage, but I burn a significant portion of my tank drive to and from the coast.
