I'm glad to hear that everybody I've heard from so far hasn't suffered much loss beyond property damage.
I'm thinking very seriously about Rambo-ing my way to the Mississippi Gulf Coast tomorrow morning (9/2). I'll make a more serious decision when I hear back from a convoy that departed today. I haven't been able to the call through the impenetrable fog that is the cellular and hard-wire telephone system in the 228 area code. With Red Cross and FEMA aid possibly being delayed for a week or more, I feel that I need to tie a camoflage band around my head and deliver some water, food, and gas to these people.
If only my panty-dropping Geo Metro could be retro-fitted with tank treads.
Note to self: get a car-charger for the DS too.

I think I might start wearing a sweatband on principle.

Thanks for the traffic information, though. I ended up driving down 90 the whole way because I wasn't sure if the interstate bridges connecting Mobile to the Mississippi Gulf Coast were still accessable. If had the notion to check my e-mail from campus before going, it possibly would've saved me some time.

As for calls, people down there seem to be able to call out, but it is virtually impossible to call in. Text messaging works better.

As far as supplies went, I took over several grocery stores' worth of water, gatorade, food, and a couple of gallons of gas (all I could get with the $25 limit in Mobile). What's the latest with your folks?

the Geo's 3 cylinders of fuel-consuming power are looking pretty nice right now. there is no food, water or gasoline coming into the area. it's like watching Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome, Waterworld, and Escape from New York all at the same time.
